Ring-Opening Polymerization

Several ring-structured monomers such as ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, glycidol, lactide, caprolactone, glycolide, di-n-allyl cyclopropane-1,1-dicarboxylate, etc, have been utilized to make numerous polymer products, interestingly in our lab, almost all of which were produced through the procedures of anionic ring-opening polymerization.

Depending the structure of initiator, the synthesized polymer could be linear or star-shaped (or say three armed, four or more armed), while a dendrimer structure can be generated by using glycidol. When two or more monomers are used, the resulting copolymer could be random or block structured. Furthermore, most of polymers synthesized in this category are terminated with hydroxyl groups, from which many types of end functional polymers can be derived.
